Ruby on Rails

I realize I'm late coming to the Ruby on Rails party, but wow, just wow.

I would classify myself as an asp.net C# developer, Java before that, C/C++ before that then there was basic and Ada (yes, Ada). All things considered I'm very comfortable with knowing what's going on behind the scenes and generally pretty excited about new technologies. I was excited to start using the MVC stuff for ASP.NET when it came out.

All I can say about Ruby on Rails is wow, it's really magic.

After developing with it for just a few days I can see how much work and thought was put into making it a really usable fun language that does a lot of the pedantic work for you. Their MVC paradigm isn't forced, but rather feels like the entire language and framework were built around it. The language is comfortable even though it's new. All in all, if you've been thinking about trying out ruby on rails, give it a shot, and be amazed.

Will I start writing every little thing in ruby? No. I still love C#, but being a technophile I'm always interested in the next thing that's going to make me smarter or make my life easier. Learning Ruby has done that. I'll keep it up and check back here.

Citizen Rain

Katherine started blogging for her work on a blog called Citizen Rain. It's an aggregate of a bunch of the local Seattle blogs. Kind of a one stop shop for what's going on around this great rainy city. It's really well put together and since the contributors are all journalists the writing's great too. It's part cool content from around the City and part new content of what the contributors think is cool.

Check it out at:

I'm just like the MPAA

If you want to be just like the MPAA, and I know you all do, you can now “own” your own 128 bit integer. Or at least you can own it in the same way that the MPAA claims they own it. This site will generate a random 128 bit integer, encrypt a copyrighted Haiku with it, and then deed the number back to you. You don’t actually get a copyright on either the number or the haiku, but the process makes your number an illegal circumvention device under the DMCA.

I’ve created my own number, which is 9B-9E-E7-B6-51-C5-68-4B-DA-16-2A-8A-FC-3D-92-65. I will be doing regular Google searches and be sending out Cease and Desist letters if I find it used anywhere else!

When I grow up I want to be a Draconian copyright association.

Oh by the way, if you’re curious "the number" has surpassed 1,730,000 hits on google. My number still has no hits. :->

Great new blog

My boss, Jason, has finally started a blog, it's called "The Good Life" and can be found at http://jtaylorgoodlife.blogspot.com/. His writing is well thought out, in depth, and very intersting to read. He even throws in a bit of humor here and there. I highly suggest you put it on your reading list or add it to your RSS feed.
